【英文摘要】 Prof. Xia Nai（1910～1985）was an outstanding Chinesearchaeologist of substantial scholarly achievement. Hisacademic researches featured profound erudition,a wide fieldof vision and a rigorous scientific approach. In archaeologyof prehistoric China,his major contributions consisted in theamendment of the chronological system of Neolithic culturesin the upper Yellow River valley, the standardization of thedenomination of cultures in Chinese archaeology, the offeringat an earlier time of the theory of pluralism on thedevelopment of the Neolithic culture in China, andarchaeological inquiry into the origin of Chinesecivilization.In archaeology of historic times in China,he wasgood at further and further researches in the light ofabundant archaeological data and reliable literary records.His attainments in the archaeological study of the historyof scienceand technology in China as well as that of Sino-Western communications deserve to be emphasized as pioneer, important contributions.

新中国成立以后，夏鼐先生领导国家考古研究中心机构，历时30余年。他致力于考古工作队伍的建设和实事求是优良学风的形成、考古研究规划的制定和田野考古水平的提高、自然科学方法的应用和多种学科研究的协调、以及与外国考古学界的学术交流，从而极大地推进了我国考古工作的全面发展。
